How It Happened

  1. FT

Full time: Fleetwood Town win the shootout 5-3 after a 1-1 draw, dumping Arsenal out of the Carabao Cup. Loupalo-Bi's first-half strike was cancelled out by Gyökeres early in the second period, and despite dominating possession and shots (26-3) and playing extra time a man light following Dowman's red card, Arsenal couldn't find a winner. In the shootout Guimarães was the only man to miss for Arsenal, while Cannon and Haughey were clinical for Fleetwood to seal a memorable win.

  2. Full time · 1-1
  3. 95'

Arsenal kept battering away even down to ten men, with White and Ødegaard both forced saves out of Lynch and Gyökeres seeing a shot blocked in the scramble before the whistle. Eze and Havertz also had late efforts in a frantic finish, but Fleetwood held firm to force extra time - the shot count now a staggering 26-3 in Arsenal's favour, yet still honours even at 1-1 as it heads to penalties.

  4. 95'

It went all the way to penalties after extra time couldn't separate the sides, and what a shootout it proved. Gyökeres kept his cool to score for Arsenal, but Bruno Guimarães saw his effort saved by Lynch, and Fleetwood held their nerve through Cannon and Haughey to win the shootout 5-3 - a cruel end for Arsenal after utterly dominating the game at 26 shots to 3.

Havertz and Lewis-Skelly both saw efforts blocked, with Ødegaard's cross almost creating another chance, while Lewis-Skelly also fired wide after a good Havertz assist. Fleetwood made a double change to try to freshen things up, and Eze has come on for Arsenal too, but the shot count has climbed to 19-1 and it remains relentless pressure from the visitors at 1-1.

Fleetwood are being penned in and their indiscipline has worsened, with McLean booked for a bad foul and the fouls count now up to 11. It's one-way traffic at Highbury - 16 shots to one - but Fleetwood still cling to parity at 1-1.

    Fleetwood Town1-1Arsenal

Half time at Highbury: Fleetwood lead 1-0 despite being utterly overrun. Arsenal have had 11 shots to Fleetwood's one and over 77% of the ball, but Loupalo-Bi's early strike is still the only goal to show for either side. A frustrating half for the visitors, who'll know a response is needed after the break.

  66. Half time · 1-0
  67. 45+8'

Arsenal kept probing right to the whistle, with Timber getting forward twice in injury time - a header wide from Dowman's cross and then a tricky angled effort that didn't trouble Lynch. Fleetwood's discipline continues to fray, with fouls climbing to eight as they soak up pressure, but they'll go in ahead at the break having barely threatened beyond that one goal. Arsenal's dominance remains stark - 11 shots to one, over three-quarters of the ball - yet the scoreboard still reads 1-0 to the visitors from League Two.

  75. 43'

Arsenal have kept pressing for an equaliser before the break, with Havertz denied twice in quick succession - a blocked effort from the centre of the box and a header wide from Dowman's cross. Fleetwood continue to ride their luck, still yet to add to that solitary shot, and are resorting to fouls to break things up, while Timber's offside flag was the closest Arsenal came to adding another body forward. The hosts lead 1-0 against the run of play as the half draws to a close.

Arsenal have continued to press for an equaliser since falling behind, racking up further efforts through Mosquera, Havertz and Gyökeres, with Lynch doing well to save the latter's strike from outside the box. Fleetwood have barely had a look-in going forward, still stuck on just the one shot, but their defending and fouling has kept the deficit intact as Arsenal's dominance - now over 70% possession - has yet to yield a goal.

Sucker punch at Highbury! Against the run of play, Aaron Loupalo-Bi fires Fleetwood in front with a left-footed finish from the left side of the box - their only shot of the game so far, but it's found the net. Arsenal will be stung by that having dominated possession and chances up to this point.

Lewis-Skelly also saw an effort blocked after a surging run, while Fleetwood's main contribution has been fouling, with Mark Helm twice penalised. The hosts have yet to register a shot.

Early days at Highbury but Arsenal have monopolised the ball, enjoying a full share of possession in the opening ten minutes. It's been a scrappy start for Fleetwood, who gave away the game's only foul on O'Neill, though neither side has managed a shot yet as Arsenal look to build patiently.
