Arsenal Women 1-1 Birmingham City Women: Hosts booed as late rally only earns a point

Arsenal Women were held to a 1-1 draw by bottom-of-the-table Birmingham City at the Emirates Stadium, another frustrating result that leaves the Gunners languishing in the bottom half of the Women's Super League table. Having dominated possession and territory for long spells, Arsenal once again found themselves made to work for a point against opponents who arrived in London without a league win all season.

It was Birmingham who struck first against the run of play. Oceane Hurtre fired home from the centre of the box on 53 minutes, finishing off a fast break that was finished with a left-footed shot into the bottom corner, with Neve Herron picking up the assist. The goal silenced the home crowd and left Arsenal needing a response.

That response came through Olivia Smith, who levelled matters on 66 minutes with a well-struck right-footed effort from outside the box that flew into the top corner. Georgia Stanway supplied the assist, but the German battled through fouls of their own as the game became increasingly feisty in the second half.

Stanway was shown a yellow card on 70 minutes for a bad foul, with Birmingham's Herron booked for a similar offence just two minutes later. Arsenal made a flurry of changes as they searched for a winner, bringing on Geraldine Reuteler, Emily Fox, Caitlin Foord and Elisa De Almeida, while Birmingham had to withdraw the injured goalscorer Hurtre, replaced by Veatriki Sarri, after she needed treatment late on.

The numbers told a story of Arsenal dominance that still ended in frustration. The hosts had 75.8 per cent of possession and racked up 27 shots to Birmingham's five, with 11 corners won compared to just one for the visitors. Yet only four of those efforts were on target, and Birmingham goalkeeper Sophie Baggaley and her defence, who made 58 clearances between them, held firm to earn a share of the spoils.

The draw keeps Birmingham without a win in the league this season, while Arsenal remain stuck in the bottom half of the table. According to Sky Sports, the home supporters made their feelings known, booing the team off the pitch as pressure continued to mount on manager Renee Slegers following the result (Sky Sports).

With Manchester City and Chelsea pulling clear at the top of the table, this was another missed opportunity for Arsenal to close the gap, and the manner of the performance, dominant without being clinical, will do little to ease the scrutiny around the club heading into the next round of fixtures.
