Arsenal Women 1-1 Aston Villa Women: Russo header rescues late point for Gunners

Arsenal Women were made to work hard for a point at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday afternoon, with Alessia Russo's late header cancelling out Chasity Grant's first-half opener as the sides shared the spoils 1-1 in the Women's Super League.

The result leaves both clubs level on points, with Arsenal having had the lion's share of possession and chances but Aston Villa showing plenty of resolve to leave north London with a share of the points rather than a defeat.

Aston Villa struck first against the run of general expectation when Chasity Grant fired home from the right side of the box in the 25th minute, finishing well after being set up by Lynn Wilms. The visitors held that lead deep into the second half despite facing wave after wave of Arsenal pressure.

Arsenal's breakthrough finally came in the 85th minute. Substitute Stina Blackstenius, who had only just been introduced, whipped in a cross for fellow replacement forward Alessia Russo to nod home from close range and level the scores, sparing Arsenal's blushes in front of their own supporters.

There were a number of stoppages for injuries during the game. Both Océane Deslandes of Aston Villa and Russo himself needed treatment before half-time, while Arsenal defender Steph Catley was forced off later in the second half, with Élisa De Almeida coming on in her place. No cards were shown to either side across the ninety-plus minutes.

The statistics tell the story of a game dominated territorially by the hosts, who had roughly two-thirds of the possession and ran up 28 shots to Villa's solitary attempt, yet could not find a way through until that late Russo intervention. Villa's goalkeeper was called upon to make seven saves as her side soaked up pressure, while also throwing bodies in the way with 41 clearances to Arsenal's five.

The draw means Arsenal remain without a win in their last two WSL outings, continuing a mixed run of form, while Aston Villa will be satisfied to have taken something from a difficult trip having gone into the game on a much stronger run of results. Sky Sports had the game as part of their live WSL coverage as Arsenal hosted Villa in a fixture billed alongside Manchester City's trip to face London City elsewhere in the division (Sky Sports).

Both sets of fans will have mixed feelings: Arsenal's faithful will wonder what might have been given their dominance of the ball and shots, while Villa supporters can take real encouragement from a backs-to-the-wall display that so nearly yielded all three points away from home.
